THRESHOLDS OF THE SOUL
When the sun sets on October 31st, the wheel of the year seems to stand still for just a breath. When the Northern hemisphere plunges into darkness, Samhain unravels the weave of time and space. The veil between the worlds, between conscious and unconscious loses its density and opens up for deep insights and introspection. The concept of time is merely a human construct – it provides a sense of order and orientation, while it limits our awareness for synchronicity. Samhain is an invitation to open up to the unseen and to the soothing blanket of darkness.
The Crone
Samhain is a moment between the times and often connected to ancestors and spirits. It is the time when the Crone steps forward. She is the third entity of the triple Goddess – the Maiden represents Spring, fertility, new life and new ideas; the Mother brings life and abundance, and the Crone stands for Autumn, Winter, Death and transformation. The Crone goes by many names: she is Cailleach, bringing death and destruction; she is Hecate at crossroads and liminal; she is the Morrígan, foretelling doom and death. She is all that can feel scary and lost, when she is, in fact, the guardian of thresholds. She is the one who has been through the whole cycle, she is the wise one. She knows that letting go of what doesn’t serve any more is natural and liberating and necessary in order to progress.
Crossing thresholds and transforming is a natural part of life, and we can see it in nature every day. The autumnal trees do it effortlessly and turn their transformation into a celebration of colours and beauty. Their shedding is a beautiful spectacle. They celebrate what is dying and needs to go in order to gather strength for the next cycle. Samhain asks us to do the same and let go without fighting and mourning. It is time.
Ancestors and former versions
Samhain is also an invitation to connect with our ancestors. And while it can be actual ancestors, all those who came before us and shaped us in one way or another, we can also connect to former versions of ourselves. What were the dreams that have died, and what did they teach you? Who were you a couple of years ago or even a couple of minutes ago? When we consider for a moment that time is not a linear line but several threads, then we have access to all that was and all that will be. We can weave our own magic carpet. We are the Maiden, the Mother, and the Crone; we are young and nourished and wise.
On Samhain, sit with all these versions of yourself. Sit with your ancestors and with the threads of time. Light a candle in the darkness and shine light on all that seems heavy and daunting. Let it be light, let it go. Every threshold marks and ending and a beginning. And so it is.
